In keeping with our vision of preserving Finnsheep worldwide through
the Finnsheep's ability to penetrate a larger number of markets, we have developed unique programs designed to increase the Finnsheep's marketability.    Our traditional registry records purebred animals from all recognized Finnsheep registries worldwide.  Purebreds receive high quality registration papers with the IFR's unique seal.  The IFR Breed Improvement Program allows for the addition of scrapie resistant genetics and improvement in the overall quality of the breed.   Our Recapture Program allows those with currently non-registered Finnsheep flocks to work towards the restoration of their flock's registration status. This process takes several years and original entrants into the program must undergo an approval process.  The IFR does not utilize an open-registry "breed-up" program although it recognizes that other registries often do.  We believe that simple blood percentages are not the sole criteria that should be used when developing or improving a breed.  Careful attention to the traits and characteristics that define the breed must be carefully considered and balanced with needed adaptations to insure the breed's preservation.

Finnsheep Rams should have excellent muscling,  bone structure and conformation.  The breed is known for its high fertility and manageable temperament.

The IFR Mission Statement clearly outlines the IFR's committment to having its representatives work alongside Finnsheep breeders in a supportive manner.  We believe that by better supporting our members, they will be able to successfully produce, market and sell their Finnsheep products in an ever expanding marketplace.  By creating a demand for Finnsheep and Finnsheep products, the breed can be preserved for future generations.

Finnsheep are one of the world's most versatile production sheep breeds.  They are a necessary component of any farm that requires production and diverse quality wool products in an environmentally-friendly, easy to manage package.   We welcome you to the International Finnsheep Registry website and invite you to spend some time here learning about the Finnsheep breed.  Questions, comments and suggestions are always welcomed by the IFR; please feel free to contact any member or board executive (listed on the Contact page).  We welcome your inquiries!
