IFR Board Director, Dr. Mary-Anne Ost visited with Finnsheep breeders, merchants and crafters during a visit to Helsinki, Finland in May.  Dr. Ost spoke in depth with several Finnsheep producers regarding their programs and the the products they produced.  Her story is in the June issue of the IFR newsletter.
Dr. Ost is the third IFR Board member to visit Finland within the last seven months.  Last fall, the IFR President and IFR Secretary also visited the country and spent a week meeting with Finnsheep breeders and representatives.  Finland has significantly improved their national breed through targeted programs to insure the long-term use and preservation of the breed.
Thank you Dr. Ost for your outstanding representation of the IFR!

Scrapie Resistance in IFR Finnsheep!  The IFR supports scrapie eradication  and we are actively working to improve the health of our sheep.  Through the dedication of our breeder members, we have been able to develop various lines of scrapie resistant Finnsheep that are suitable for both large scale commercial sheep operations as well as today's small farms.  IFR registered Finnsheep with scrapie resistant genetics are available in white and colored breeding stock.

Wool is a profitable investment if it is properly prepared and of high quality.  Finnsheep wool is no exception.  The IFR Breed Standard makes it easier than ever before for Finnsheep breeders and buyers to identify quality Finnsheep wool, wool that gets noticed in the show ring!  These photos were taken at the  Pennsylvania Farm Show 2013 Fleece to Shawl competition.  As you can see from the photograph, the shawl, made exclusively of Finnsheep wool produced by an IFR member flock,  won Grand Champion!  All shawls produced during the competition were auctioned at the end of the evening.  This gorgeous Finnsheep  shawl went for $1025.   Definitely a profitable investment!
